A tip on French-Canadian tipping

For those of you who are headed to Montreal for next week's SOR meeting, here's something to keep in mind.  Due to a new provincial law, you have to accompany your server to the credit card station and tell that person the amount you wish to tip.  Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification.  Most of the hospitality workers I’ve encountered in and around Montreal are familiar with English.

  1. I found it always help to tell them you are an American too, as then they are quite forgiving of your lack of French. Although the fact that your credit card also doesn't have a chip in it (hence the trip to the station) is also a big tipoff too.

And no, they do not take American money any more than you would take Canadian money. Get some from your bank before you travel.
